Mother's Day Make-A-Wish Convoy

Moms kept busy with their kids face painting, playing games, and dancing with clowns on Sunday. Fun and games were a part of the 22nd annual Make-A-Wish Foundation Mother's Day Truck Convoy.

"It's rewarding and it's just a fun day for me, ya know," said Kathryn Zwally. "We come out here each year...my kids enjoy it, and I get to enjoy it too."

But, officials with the convoy had to get serious. Five people were sent to the hospital during last Sunday's Make-A-Wish convoy in Adams County. Police say kids sitting in lawn chairs, people not wearing seatbelts, and drivers not paying attention resulted in dangerous consequences. That's why Make-A-Wish C.E.O and President, Dennis Heron said safety was top priority.

"We have done painstaking work to make sure that this convoy is as safe as it could possibly be."

More than 300 trucks and 110 ‘Wish Children' participated in Sunday's convoy. Each driver received a safety checklist and police made sure every passenger wore a seatbelt. Proper permits allowed fire-police to accompany the roundtrip from Lancaster City to Ephrata.

"We made sure every road policy whether its local, state, or federal ordinance [was] adhered to," said Heron.

Ensuring a safe trip meant the focus was back on the children in need.

"Make a Wish is able to send these kids and sponsor that through everybody's donation...corporate...private," said Make-A-Wish mom Shannon Rineir. "So, it's a great thing everybody does to get together."

Foundation officials say all the money raised stays in the area. Rineir's daughter, Isabella, is in relapse once again. That's why Rineir wanted this Mother's Day to be special.

"This very well could be my last Mother's Day with both my kids...it means a lot," said Rineir.
